Ames Farm: Past and Present

Ames Farm Inn, on the shore of Lake Winnipesaukee, was established in 1890 by James Noah Ames, on land that had been owned by his grandfather, a pioneer settler of Gilford. It has been in the Ames family ever since.

Ames Farm Inn is situated on three hundred acres of lakeshore, field, and mountain woodland. We offer rooms, housekeeping apartments, and lakeshore cabins. A spacious dining room provides two meals a day with delicious homestyle cooking.

A quarter mile of sandy beach offers unsurpassed swimming and boating facilities. Lake Winnipesaukee, reputedly the site of the first summer resort in the country, Ames Farm Inn, is one of the largest and certainly most beautiful inland lakes in the United States. It is surrounded by the breathtakingly majestic mountains of New Hampshire. The Lake is dotted with hundreds of islands, and its spring fed waters are clear and unpolluted. Landlocked salmon, trout, perch, bass, and other varieties make fishing a challenging and enjoyable experience for young and old from April to October.

Numerous recreation facilities are close by including Gunstock Recreation Area, several golf courses, and hiking trails. Churches of various denominations are also accessible. Boat trips on the Lake are available from nearby points and it is an easy drive to the beauty of the White Mountains of New Hampshire.
